Santorini is a dream destination that many hope to visit one day.  Built on the remains of an erupted volcano, its dramatic cliffs, intensely blue lagoon-like sea and contrasting white cobbled streets and buildings make for spectacular views. Last May, I spent a very happy birthday there soaking up the gorgeous weather and stunning scenery.  Here are my top 5 reasons to visit Santorini.

Tzatziki, pitta bread, vine leaves, olives, Greek salad, feta cheese, falafel, aubergine: I was in heaven.  Sit on rooftop bars with the blue sea below you as you sip a cool beer and tuck into delicious Greek mezze.

Rooftop dinner in Oia

It is like being in a music video with lots of beautiful people who smile and waft everywhere.  You can live the holiday wardrobe dream of white linens, wedge heels and sun hats.

Every bit as stunningly picturesque as the fairytale postcards, my top photo spots were:

  • The sunset from the very edge of Oia – get there early to get a good spot
  • The white buildings and blue roofs stretching into the distance from Thira
  • The peaceful views over the island from the quieter end of the island at Akrotiri
  • The mountain top at Ancient Thera overlooking the sea

Zip around the island on a quad bike. Most companies will drop them off at your accommodation and pick them up when you’re finished. You can make it around the island from one end to the other in a couple of hours.  We drove up to Oia at the top of the island for dinner one evening and wound back through the hills with the night air rushing through our hair. The sailing is absolutely amazing and breathtaking! You can go here to learn more about sailing and boating.

In terms of getting there, we took a boat from Athens; sailing into port was suitably stylish.

Light and airy jewellery shops selling pale gemstones wrapped in silver and gold, colourful sandals, floaty dresses, scarves, hats and beautiful trinkets line the narrow winding streets.

I didn’t need 5 reasons to visit Santorini, the views alone were good enough for me. So glad though that you’ve provided me with a few more, this may have just moved up on my bucket list! 🙂
